CaptiveDVDAs a long time fan of movies based on a true story, I can honestly say that I was on the edge of my seat while watching Captive.

Where sin abounded, grace abounded much more. Romans 5:20 is a bible verse that appears on the screen as the movie begins to play.

Imagine just recently losing your husband and attempting to recover from a Meth drug addiction in an effort to improve your life and regain custody of your daughter.

After attending a recovery group meeting, a lady gives Ashley the book entitled The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. Being only two days clean this time, Ashley does not have a lot of hope, so she promptly chunks the book in the trash as she exits the building.

Meanwhile, a convicted rapist, Brian, overpowers the authorities in the jail, takes the gun and radio, and is able to escape after killing several people and severely injuring one on his way out of the building.

Ashley makes her way into work where she finds that the same lady that gave her the book earlier in the day has now dropped off a package with a note saying, “You forgot something …” with the same book inside of the package.

As the story progresses, the escaped convict takes Ashley hostage in her own apartment! Things were completely intense as she was not sure what his next move would be. Then, he asks for drugs, which she gives to him but refuses to do herself. There she is, trapped in her apartment with Brian, who has now just used drugs and would be capable of anything at this point!

Since we sat down to watch this movie as a family I will admit that there was a certain part in the movie where I had to turn it off until everyone else cleared the room so I could make sure it was suitable for us to continue watching it with our 11 year old present. The part I’m referring to was strongly suggestive based on the character, Brian, having been in jail for rape, among other things. Leading up to this scene, it appeared that while he was holding Ashley captive in her apartment that he may rape her at this moment. However, he did not. When I realized this, I allowed my family to come back into the room to finish the movie together.

What ends up happening is something I never would have imagined. Ashley begins to use The Purpose Driven Life to offer hope and light in the mist of despair. Brian seemed to receive the message in this book well, and it provides hope for them both in this situation and what they are facing in their individual lives.

This movie takes you deep with the characters as the plot thickens and things begin to play out.

I have watched this movie twice now. It is amazing to see how God provided hope in this situation to both Brian and Ashley. At the end of the movie, it has a snippet of the real Ashley as she appeared on Oprah and got a chance to meet the author of the book, Rick Warren. It also provided updates on the individuals involved throughout the movie.

On Christmas morning, along with all of her other presents, my daughter unwrapped The Plans I Have For You Devotional and Journal set.  Her little face lit up as she realized she had a “big girl” set similar to the one that she sees me with.

I wondered if she would be thrilled with this devotional and journal for the first few days after Christmas, but then toss it aside as she lost interest.  Much to my surprise, though, she has continued reading this devotional and writing daily in her journal.  She was so excited by it and what all the devotional had to say that she read a few days ahead as well.

Today, I asked her what she thought of the set.  She smiled and said she really liked it a lot and uses it daily, even if I do not see her with it.  She said she will go into her room to have her quiet time with God’s word.  That touched my heart when she said that.

How reassuring for them to know that as little as they are, God has a plan for their lives! He has given them all unique qualities, gifts, talents, and characteristics that no one else on this earth possesses.  God molded and crafted them with His own hands and has set forth a distinct purpose and plan for their lives.

WarRoomThe name itself brings about visions of soldiers gathered around planning their defenses on the front line of the battlefield.  Yet, we’re not going out there carrying guns, preparing to go to war with firearms.  Our war is a different one, but the enemy is relentless just the same.  He comes to steal, kill, and destroy.  And that is why we must fight our battle on our knees in prayer!

A spiritual war is going on.

Imagine having the best of everything:  nice house, picture perfect marriage on the outside, beautiful child, great job with wonderful benefits.  You never realize that you’re under attack as he creeps in slowly, determined to take you down.  That is exactly what happened in the movie War Room.  Although this was a made up movie, I am sure that many couples can identify with the crisis situations their entire family went through when under attack by the devil.  I know I sure could.

Several months back, I received an invitation for a pre-screening of this movie.  I asked my husband if he would like to go with me, explaining that we could take this opportunity to have a date night.  I had no idea what this movie was about, but the title itself brought about the very visions that I spoke of in the first paragraph of this post.

I’ll never forget walking into the theater, taking my seat along with the others, and watching as my life from the year before played out in front of my eyes on the screen.  While it was not identical to what my family and I went through, there were certainly some similarities.  I sat there with tears streaming down my face as I felt all of those emotions all over again.

Every one should have a “Miss Clara” in their life.  She is one of the main characters in this movie, and she is so filled with the holy spirit.  She is on a mission to mentor to people and help them draw closer to God, and I wish I had a Miss Clara when my family and I were going through our trials the year before this movie hit theaters.  My dad was the closest I had to a “Miss Clara,” and he kept me strong in my faith as I fought, begged, pleaded, and prayed through tears many days and nights for my marriage, my family, my children, and my husband!

Miss Clara shared how she fights her battles in prayer in her War Room.  She turned an ordinary closet in her home into a place where she made specific prayer strategies and prayed with all of her might while turning to scriptures to strengthen and encourage her.

Another main character, Elizabeth, was struggling with bitterness in her marriage while her husband, Tony, was flirting with temptation.  Miss Clara had Elizabeth write down a list of things that troubled her about her marriage and then asked her to turn it over to God. Pray over it.  Fight for her marriage!

A pivotal moment was when Elizabeth prayed over her husband, her marriage and her family.  Then she got angry and went through the house rebuking the devil, letting him know that he was NOT welcome there and that he could NOT have her family!  I felt such emotion well up inside of me as I, too, had done something very similar the year before!

Another pivotal moment was when Tony, Elizabeth’s husband, realized that his wife was praying for him.  He found the scriptures and specific prayers his wife had written down and placed on the wall in her war room.  He began to realize the error in his ways and how wrong his actions had been.  He was not happy with the person he had become, and he fell on his knees before the Lord asking for forgiveness.  Later, he humbled himself before Elizabeth when he asked for her forgiveness as well.  This was powerful to see a man confessing his sins before the Lord and his wife.  I imagine it was also empowering to men every where who have been taught untruths as boys that “real men don’t cry.”  This man had rivers of tears flowing several times when God convicted his heart.  He cried and begged for forgiveness as he sought to turn from his sinful ways.

To say that this movie is powerful would truly be an understatement.  There are not enough words in the human language to adequately express how truly inspiring and moving this movie truly is!  It isn’t just a movie.  It has brought about  movement!  I, personally, know of a women that was so inspired by this movie that she created a war room in her house as well.

Growing up, I heard them making reference to going into your closet and praying.  I’ll never forget the impact of those words I heard in church.  I thought it odd at first, but wishing to be obedient, I literally walked into my closet as a child and prayed.  I had no way of knowing that many years later, a movie would be made based on this whole concept and would encourage people around the world to go into their own closets to fight their battles in prayer!

Please … if you want to see God’s hand moving in your homes, marriages, families … begin with PRAYER!  If you’re not sure where to start, the War Room movie will point you in the right direction.  There are companion books to go along with this movie, one specifically states it is “A Woman’s Battle Plan For Serious, Specific, and Strategic Prayer;” Fervent was written by Priscilla Shirer, who played Elizabeth in War Room.  Another book sure to help you is The Battle Plan For Prayer:  From Basic Training To Targeted Strategies by Stephen & Alex Kendrick, the master minds behind War Room.

This movie comes out on DVD December 22, 2015.  I encourage you to BUY this movie!  It is one that you will watch again and again.  Thanks to FlyBy Productions/Propeller, we were given an advanced copy of this not yet released DVD.  My 11 year old daughter was glued to this movie the entire time.  Our 18 year old daughter watched it as well.  I believe they, too, were impacted by this movie.

Christmas Music All Around

This album just released on October 23, 2015, and I had it playing at work shortly thereafter.  Music relaxes me while I work, and what better way to go about your day than with worship music floating out of the speakers on my desk?!

I’ve been a fan of Chris Tomlin for a long time, often using songs for our praise and worship interpretive dances when I was the director at our church a few years ago.  Chris Tomlin always brings about a worshipful experience in the way he presents the songs.  From the music to the words ushering us into God’s holy presence, any time you listen to Chris Tomlin, you will feel like it has been a worshipful experience.  His Christmas music is no different!

Recently, I was the recipient of a Men’s Devotional Bible.  Sure, I had seen my wife with her brightly colored pink devotional bible for women, but the thought never really crossed my mind about having one of my own.  Until I received this gift.

You may be asking what could be so special about the Men’s Devotional Bible, and you may think this is just another copy of the Good Book.  However, as I began to take more time to dig into this bible, I saw a daily devotion drawn from the Bible to encourage and strengthen a man’s heart and life.  So now we have The Word, and we also have devotional material … just like that of my wife’s bible but geared more toward a man!

Each book of the bible is introduced with a subtitle and a brief overview of its understanding.  This is particularly interesting to me as I sometimes find parts of the Bible to be hard to read or understand.   Some examples of this are SONG OF SOLOMON 2:8-17 TRUE LOVE’S WAYS  and JOB 16  WHEN IT FEELS AS IF GOD IS AGAINST US.

Another interesting feature of this Bible are the 14 articles written to contribute to man’s walk with God and a dictionary of key terms in the Bible.

I recommend this Bible as a unique gift idea any time, but especially now at Christmastime.  This devotional bible will help develop any man’s desire to get closer to God, be a better man, husband, or father, and be kept away from daily distractions.

I am very thankful to my wife, Shirley, for the gift of this bible!

My Grandma’s Bible

The book with the worn cover sat beside her favorite overstuffed rocking recliner in the living room.  Picking it up, she would run her long fingers over the curled edges, then flip it open to reveal vibrant colors of yellow and pink along with cursive writing along the sides.  I’m referring to my grandma’s bible.

After my grandmother’s death two years ago, this bible was given to my dad.  It took him a while to be able to open it to read what my grandmother had written.  When he felt strong enough, he ran his long fingers over the same cover, just as my grandma used to do, before he opened.  He paused to gather his composure as he saw her “chicken scratch writing” as she used to describe it.  Tucked inside were slips of paper in the form of notes that her grandchildren had written when they were little.  One such note was written by me as a child.

As my dad carefully turned the pages of his mother’s bible, he found notes along the sides and in the back that she had written about her family.  Some were even prayers about her family, pleading with God for His hand of protection and safety over us all.

My grandmother probably never realized the greatest gift she was leaving behind for her family; the gift of her thoughts as she pondered God’s word and highlighted her favorite verses that spoke to her through the years.  Now she continues to speak to us through the words she wrote in her bible.

Long before there was even a notion of creating a journaling bible, my grandma created her own.  Now that this generation has realized the value of such, they’ve created a place for your notes and thoughts in the form of a journaling bible!

Having just received my very own journaling bible, I’d like to share with you how impressed I was and still am with it!

The bible came in a protective case. Once I carefully slid the bible out of the case, I couldn’t help but run my hand over the cover as it felt almost like suede.  It does not have the traditional bible cover.  Instead, it looks just like a fancy journal.  I opened it and carefully turned the cream colored pages to find two inch margins to write thoughts and prayers of my own!  My thoughts immediately turned to my grandma and how she would have LOVED to have a bible like this!

Faith of Our Fathers

Recently, we settled in for the night with hibachi takeout, popped in the DVD Faith of Our Fathers, and sat back for an enjoyable family night together with our 11 year old daughter.  One thing I especially love about these types of movies is that they are Christian movies.  You do not have to worry about the content or if anything will be inappropriate for little eyes to see or hear.

This particular story line began with John Paul and Wayne searching for answers to questions they had for years about the fathers they never knew.  Sadly, both of their fathers died 25 years before in the jungle of Vietnam.

As the plot thickens, the two young men decide to embark on a journey together to the Vietnam Wall in Washington, DC.  Along the way, John Paul and Wayne learn about who their fathers really were and what they believed in.  They were afforded this opportunity by reading letters their fathers had written years earlier.  They became to understand that their fathers both struggled, just as they did.  Thankfully, the fathers turned to God for help.  A very interesting fact John Paul learned is that his dad wanted to be a preacher.  In fact, John Paul actually lead Wayne’s dad to Christ before they both died while serving the Lord and their great country.

Toward the end of the trip, the story unfolds into the young men unexpectedly meeting both their father’s platoon leader who served with them in the war.  The story line will keep you on the edge of your seat as you travel along with them on this journey!

Christmas Memories

The weather has turned colder now in the South. I love this time of year as leaves are turning beautiful vibrant shades of red, yellow, and orange. Soon they will fall to the ground and be swept away by the Winter wind.

I bundled up for work thinking to myself, “I am not ready for this …” but soon after arriving at work and turning my little heater on in my office, I thought of how the cold weather would soon be ushering in the Christmas Spirit. People would be nicer, more friendly, warm and welcoming in your dealings with them.

Wanting that feeling right then and there, I did what any sane person would do in the middle of October. I put in my Christmas Memories CD by David Osborne and allowed the tunes to whisk me away to happier times.

Familiar tunes ringing in my ear took me back to when I sang in the choir at church. I always looked forward to the Christmas cantatas and bellowing out Joy To The World with great enthusiasm with the other choir members.

I’ll Be Home for Christmas always makes me think of service men and women that are not able to be with their families at Christmastime. They sacrifice for us so that we may have a peaceful Christmas with our loved ones.

White Christmas reminds me of 7th and 8th Grade Chorus in middle school when I had to sing duet with my classmate, Chris. Not only did I get to sing with him, but I also got to perform the sign language to it as well. This was my absolute favorite and something I will never, ever forget doing! A local radio station came to this performance, and I’ll never forget my excitement thinking that we would be heard on the radio!

There are so many wonderful Christmas songs that have memories rushing in as they began to play. A wide smile formed on my lips as I allowed myself to get swept up in the moment of Christmas Memories.

Mr. Osborne has done an excellent job and plays piano so beautifully. You will not be disappointed in this CD. This is one you can play to get in the Christmas spirit or play as you’re decorating the Christmas tree! It is so good that I would have it playing as background music as we gather with family around the table to eat the Christmas feast.

I can tell this CD will get a lot of use this holiday season and encourage you to give it a try as well. Allow it to sweep you away and usher in Christmas Memories of years past for you, too.

Faith Hope Love

As we were driving to school this morning, my daughter was in the backseat diligently studying for her bible test.  Bible is the first subject of the day at her school, and every week they have a bible verse to memorize.  That is one thing I absolutely love about the school that we chose for my daughter.  It is a private Christian school where the students do not have to be afraid to pray like so many school aged children are today.  The school WANTS you to pray, often times asking you to lead in prayer.  They encourage God to be ever present and welcome at school on a daily basis!  That is so refreshing!

Back to her bible verse.

She handed me her bible and began to recite verse after verse in Ephesians.  I was quite impressed that the words flowed from her mouth so freely, never pausing to think of what came next. She just KNEW.  I praised her for the excellent manner in which she recited the bible verse, and I sat there amazed at my child.  She had a large bible verse to memorize, and she never skipped a beat from start to finish once she got started.

As I handed the bible back to her, I noticed the bible from her childhood days.  While it is still in good condition, my thoughts immediately went to getting her a more grown up version of the bible.  She is at an in between stage right now.  She’s not a young child any more, but at 11 years old, she is not quite a teen.  I think this is what they refer to as the “Tween” stage.

I came across the NIV Bible For Teen Girls, Growing In Faith Hope Love, New International Version.  From the pretty green cover, to the words boldly printed “FAITH * HOPE * LOVE,” I knew that she would soon fall in love with this bible just as I had when I first laid my eyes on it.

Carefully opening the cover, on the “presented to” page was the bible verse:

1 Corinthians 13:13

And now these three remain:  

Faith, Hope, and Love.

But the greatest of these is love.

Indeed!

As I flipped further through this bible, I found pages where it talked about women of the bible as well as different situations they may encounter.  This bible will encourage them by the words God has given us all for our daily walks, but this bible will also support them and help them discover His will for there lives in all areas from family, guys, friends, work, and more.

One thing that caught my eye was the scriptures highlighted in pink.  Those verses, I found, are God’s promises!

I am very excited to present this bible to my daughter this afternoon when I pick her up from school.  I know she will be delighted, and her little face will light up as she opens the bible to read all about the goodness of God.

This Is Not A Test

Fond memories rush in of a time when my family and I were a part of God’s Copy Cats at a church we attended for several years.  God’s Copy Cats put on a major production in the Spring of every year, which was free to the public.  The whole reason and purpose they put on this show annually was to glorify and praise God as we ministered to the whole community.  This gave us a chance to reach hearts that may have never come to know Jesus if it hadn’t been for hearing the Word of God during our show or having words of a song touch their heart as they sat in their seat taking it all in.  Having served on the welcoming committee, I lost count of the mass of people that flooded the theater the weekend this event was held.  What a huge platform to reach lost souls!

We had black light, puppetry, hip hop dancing, and interpretive movement, and it was all based on and performed to Christian music.  My daughter was a member of God’s Copy Cats, and she has many fond memories, too, of her time on stage as she served in every capacity while on the team.  I will never forget seeing her little 10 year old self on stage doing the hip hop dances to none other than TobyMac!  Having served back stage as well during the show, we knew every single song that they would present that weekend no matter what form they were presented in.  We practiced with the team so much that TobyMac’s lyrics flowed from our lips as we sang along to his feel good music, his album fast becoming one of our favorites.

There is just something about TobyMac that makes you want to move your body as it improves your overall mood.  There is no way you can stay depressed once turning on a TobyMac song.  It is a get-out-of-your seat-and-to-your-feet type of album, no matter which you choose to listen to.  His songs are upbeat with a truly positive message and meaning behind them.

I do love taking a walk down memory lane!

As reality zaps me back to the present day, imagine our excitement as we learned of TobyMac’s newly released album, This Is Not A Test.  When my family heard me say that I was going to listen to TobyMac, their ears perked up as they all followed me into the room.  They wanted to listen, too!  I smiled and cranked up the tunes as we all four enjoyed the new sounds of Mr. TobyMac!
