Review: Growing Your Blog While Managing Your Home
This book really and truly has come into my hands at the exact time that I needed it! Honestly, I needed to read the words Jacinda Vandenberg has so eloquently written on each page in this book! Jacinda addresses common concerns we all have in the blogging world. Being that I am so new to blogging, I can use all the help I can get and appreciate her sharing the ins and outs of blogging with all of her readers.
The very first chapter struck me because I am having trouble managing my time. There, I admitted it. That was truly a moment where I had to look within and admit to myself that I was having trouble getting a hold on how to manage a home AND a blog without feeling overwhelmed. I have spent countless hours pouring myself into my blogging in an effort to make it the best it can be. I realized that in doing so, I was not being fair to my family. While I was physically present in the room with them, sometimes even sitting right next to them, I was not present mentally as I was somewhere else focusing on what article I was going to write next or editing the perfect picture to go with it. I have realized that I truly do need to schedule certain times of the day to certain tasks, and blogging has a place. It just cannot consume all of my time as I have allowed it to do recently. I have just gotten into that habit, too, with the late nights and early to rise, sometimes not going to bed until 2 a.m. because I’ve been that “in to” my blogging content or learning more about linking to others, etc. I am a bit of a perfectionist also, so that is not in my favor as I go back over my posts repeatedly checking for errors … some I catch, others not until later. My point is that I’ve been so focused on growing my blog that I have taken precious time away from my family. That ends tonight. Reading Jacinda’s words was the push I needed to break the habit that I have just recently allowed myself to fall into. Thank you, Jacinda! I will still write, but I will not work myself into a frenzy trying to make it perfect. I would like it to be for my reader’s enjoyment, but I will have to let go of perfection because it is simply not obtainable. There is not a single perfect person or thing on the face of the planet. Whew! I feel better already!
The book is packed full of information from how to schedule your posts (something that I did not know about until now, thus feeling overwhelmed in trying to get the timing down perfectly and rushing to the computer to post!) on Facebook and Twitter so you don’t have to manually do it yourself each and every day at a certain time. You just schedule and it is done after that. Yes, something to help streamline and simplify the process. Much needed and much appreciated!
Jacinda gives you ways to even monetize your blog. I did not know that was possible when I began blogging. Now it is something that I am learning bits and pieces about. Being that my blog is mainly used as my ministry, I never really considered that you could monetize. I certainly did not know it was possible to monetize to the extent that Jacinda describes. I will definitely be looking into some other ways that she suggested just to see what happens. I have even been thinking that if it turns into something that generates a little bit of money coming in, maybe at some point it would be enough to donate to a charity to help others! THAT would be beautiful!
On a side note, I love how Jacinda explains about the Proverbs 31 woman in this also. I have always loved that group of scriptures!
Jacinda was very thorough in all of the information she provided. I would recommend this book to others that are just entering the blogging world and to those that have been blogging a while but may not know all of the ins and outs. You’re bound to increase your knowledge, and there is great potential to grow your blog with the right tools at your disposal. She gives you those tools and where to begin.
